SUMMARY:The 1779 American Sullivan-Clinton Invasion: Perspective from History\, Archaeology and Indigenous Community Members
DESCRIPTION:The program will reexamine the 1779 Sullivan‑Clinton expedition into the homelands of the Onöndowa’ga:’ (Seneca) and Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫ (Cayuga) Nations of the Hodinǫ̱hsǫ́:nih during the American Revolution. Drawing on recent historical and archaeological scholarship alongside Indigenous oral histories\, Cornell Professor Kurt Jordan challenges long‑standing misconceptions about Hodinǫ̱hsǫ́:nih communities\, the motives behind the campaign\, and its lasting impact. His presentation centers Indigenous perspectives and situates the events of 1779 within deeper\, long-term Hodinǫ̱hsǫ́:nih histories\, offering a more accurate and meaningful understanding of this pivotal moment. The program is free and open to the public. \n“The 1779 American Sullivan-Clinton Invasion” is part of Geneva Read’s 2026 Community Read. The Community Read book is “A People’s History of the American Revolution” by Ray Raphael. The book brings the American Revolution to life by spotlighting the powerful\, often overlooked stories of everyday people – women\, Native Americans\, African Americans\, and others whose voices shaped the nation’s fight for freedom. SUMMARY:1776 Mock Town Hall: Should Geneva Join The Fight for Independence
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED. \nStep into one of America’s oldest and most iconic traditions – the town hall meeting\, a practice that began in the 1630s and helped shape the nation. These lively gatherings brought neighbors together to debate taxes\, schools\, land use\, and the future of their communities. \nNow it’s your turn to experience that spirit firsthand. Inspired by this year’s Community Read\, join us for an engaging\, interactive event where you’ll listen to and share multiple viewpoints on the American Revolution. After the discussion\, you’ll have the chance to cast your own vote on whether Geneva should join the fight for independence. The program is free and open to the public. \nThe “1776 Mock Town Hall” is part of Geneva Read’s 2026 Community Read. The Community Read book is “A People’s History of the American Revolution” by Ray Raphael. SUMMARY:Digging Deeper: Telling Stories with Archives
DESCRIPTION:For this year’s celebration of America’s 250th birthday\, Americans are encouraged to “Do History.” How do museums do this? How do we figure out the stories of our past? Do you ever wonder how we research our blogs\, programs\, and exhibits at Historic Geneva? Our archival collection is key to these stories. In this program\, we’re shining a spotlight on telling stories with archives. Archivist Becky Chapin and Director of Education Anne Dealy will host an interactive workshop featuring handpicked items from the Historic Geneva Archive. They will challenge attendees to look closer at a selection of photos\, scrapbooks\, diaries\, and other documents in order to tell their stories beyond a first glance. \n2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Historic Geneva is commemorating the anniversary with exhibits\, programs\, and blog articles. “Digging Deeper: Telling Stories with Archives” is part of the 250th commemoration
