Camp Comstock open house

June 16 @ 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Auto Draft

Girl Scout alums, supporters, and members of the greater Ithaca-area community are invited to the Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways Council’s historic Camp Comstock (1419 Taughannock Blvd., Ithaca) for an exclusive adults-only gathering and one-of-a-kind experience on Thursday, June 16 from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

RSVPs are requested by June 9, visit gsnypenn.org/comstockopenhouse or email Director of Development JoAnne Morak at jmorak@gsnypenn.org.

Light refreshments, adult beverages, and, of course, Girl Scout Cookies will be served. A shuttle van will assist attendees in moving up and down the hill to the camp on the west shore of Cayuga Lake. Guests can participate in a property tour and try optional traditional camp activities. Attendees should bring/wear comfortable shoes and clothing for the camp tour.

There will be a brief program at 5 p.m. in the Main Lodge with Girl Scout alums, staff, and community members sharing testimonials about their experiences at camp. GSNYPENN representatives will exhibit a scale model of a new multi-use four-season building proposed for the property and share about future possibilities in the greater Ithaca area.

Camp Comstock was named for pioneering environmental educator Anna Botsford Comstock. Author of “The Handbook of Nature Study” in the early 1900s, Comstock was the first woman to serve as an assistant professor at Cornell. She believed in celebrating the connection between humans and nature, and what children could learn from it. Camp Comstock continues her legacy and mission through Girl Scout programs in the outdoors at her namesake—which was formally dedicated on July 17, 1927.

“The local community came together nearly 100 years ago to create Camp Comstock and we hope it will once again help us sustain and preserve this community treasure for years to come,” says GSNYPENN CEO Julie Dale.

Friends of Comstock (FoC) is assisting the council and camp staff in hosting this community event. FoC is a new volunteer organization that works to promote, preserve, and enhance Camp Comstock to ensure that Girl Scouts, alums, families, and the surrounding community have continual access and activities.

Special guests and those in attendance at the event will include GSNYPENN staff and board, camp staff, Friends of Comstock committee and members, GSNYPENN History & Archives members, and representatives from Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce and Guthrie.

The Comstock Open House is sponsored by Guthrie. For questions about the event or getting involved with the GSNYPENN Council as an alum or supporter, contact Director of Development JoAnne Morak at jmorak@gsnypenn.org.
